- “MARITIME COLLECTION by AE cues For 2010 ICCS Show
- It is always difficult to come up with the final design for a theme cue for the ICCS collection, and this year was no exception. In some ways it was more difficult. I was born in a small farming town in Iowa where about the only water was a small creek running through town. Maritime wasn’t a word that came up very often. But I wasn’t going to feel sorry for myself very long. This is America, and we can do almost anything if we put our mind to it.
- I came up with a list of possible ideas, and then sat down with Jeff to see if we could come up with anything else. As we talked we realized we had both been exposed to the great equalizer at an early age—Television!! We came up with a few more ideas, but nothing felt quite right. We were drinking, and thinking, and drinking and thinking and drinking some more when suddenly it occurred to us. It was obvious!
- We had grown up for years watching Charlie the Tuna in the commercials. We would make Charlie. With that decision made we continued to celebrate the next morning. I got up and remembered the decision to build Charlie the Tuna. What had we been thinking? Who would want a Charlie the Tuna pool cue? So I started the thought process all over again. I decided I needed to expand my views to the Big Screen–Movies. After thinking about this cue for a few more days and going through my memory bank, I decided on a Pirate theme. At one time or another everyone wants to grow up to be a Pirate. It would be great to sail around, chase beautiful women and treasure, and make bad guys walk the plank. Of course, once you get all this treasure, you have to figure out what to do with it. The final decision was made to make a Pirate Treasure Map Cue.
- The old treasure maps I remember seeing always had pictures and land marks with dotted lines leading up to the spot where an X marked the spot of the buried treasure. I came up with a variety of things to inlay into the cue. The map starts in the butt with a compass so you won’t get lost. From there you follow the dotted lines to a deck cannon, past a crab to a deserted island with a couple of palm trees. From there you sail across the sea (leather wrap) to another deserted island with a palm tree. You continue the quest to a lighthouse, past a whale (possibly Moby Dick) sailing along in your 3 mast pirate ship flying the cross bones. You continue to sail along past Jeff the Tuna and end up at the promised X which marks the spot of the buried treasure under the words “PIRATES TREASURE” inlaid in the joint.
- The cue is made of ebony and ivory with a silver logo. We made all the designs in the cue with inlays rather than scrimshaw or engraving. We wanted it to play as good as it looks, so it has a straight grain maple core and ail our normal internal construction. The cue finishes out at 19 1/4 oz., and comes with 2-13mm shafts with ivory ferrules and custom joint protectors.
- We enjoyed building this cue and hope the people that see it and/or get to play with it enjoy it as much as we did making it.” – Bruce Kuhn AE cues
